Skyline Residence by Belzberg Architects in Los Angeles. Learn more about this project here. Summer blockbusters are here! It’s that time of year when Hollywood puts out the sequels, prequels, action flicks, and star-studded vehicles that it hopes will break box office records. If The Great Gatsby or Iron Man 3 aren’t your speed, there’s always Star Trek Into Darkness or The Hangover III coming up. But whatever your movie …Continue Reading

Summer Is Rescued!: Modular Pavilions By Garrison Architects Help NYC Beaches Recover From Sandy
All images by Garrison Architects. Among the many effects of Hurricane Sandy, the lack of suitable beach facilities was among the more symbolic. Destroyed bathrooms, changing rooms, and lifeguard stations would have a major dampening effect on the economic and cultural livelihood of New York City’s coastal recreation areas such as Rockaway Beach and Coney …Continue Reading

Surreal Photos Of Arctic Hunting Cabins
Cabin Barrows, a photo series by Seattle-based photographer Eirik Johnson, depicts homebuilt Alaskan hunting cabins during the seasonal extremes far above the Arctic Circle. Johnson got the idea for the series of diptychs while on assignment photographing a decommissioned US Navy base outside of Barrow, Alaska. Hugging the US’s northernmost point, Barrow is so far north that the sun …Continue Reading
Featured Project: Genius Loci By Bates Masi

Project: Genius Loci
Architect: Bates Masi + Architects
Location: Montauk, New York
With snow blanketing much of the East Coast and more on the way, we thought we’d feature some amazing projects that scream “summer.” And what’s more summer than a deluxe villa in the Hamptons? Bates Masi brings us an incredible house on Long Island called Genius Loci, a cerebral architectural term meaning “spirit of the place.” As long as we’re borrowing high-brow terminology, we might appropriate the winemaking concept of terroir, which also means the indescribable result of a place’s particular climate, geography, and culture that contribute to the final consumable product (in our case, architecture). The Montauk house is strongly tied to the Hamptons in typology, scale, and materiality. Two separate shingled volumes are connected by a screened bridge without visible supports below. A large raised terrace boasts an infinity pool and unmatched ocean views. If this is the elusive “spirit of Montauk,” we’re packing our bags!

Featured Project: Catskills Cabin By RES4

Project: Catskills Suburban
Architect: Resolution 4: Architecture
Location: Palenville, New York
Located in a mountain forest clearing, the Catskills cabin combines radically different building traditions—labor intensive masonry alongside the modular construction logic employed by the architect. The structure is anchored by several large ledge-stone walls which also house several chimneys and an elegant contemporary hearth. The rest of the house is clad in red cedar, with an accessible roof deck on the upper floor.

The Umbrellas of Águenda

Photos: Patrícia Almeida
Photographs of a delightful public art installation in Portugal have recently surfaced. A flock of brightly colored umbrellas float over a shopping street in Águenda, a small Portuguese town along the country’s northwest coastline known for, well, not very much it seems. Almost as little is know about the installation, save for these photographs and brief commentary from flickr user Patrícia Almeida. Regardless of its provenance, the work is lively enough to inspire interludes of song and dance (or pantomime) that color the iconic 1964 film “The Umbrellas of Cherbourg”. Here, the cheerful formation of parasols is is suspended in mid-air, bathing the promenade in their colorful glow, while casting an array of octagonal shadows to shade pedestrians from the hot summer sun.

Water, Water Everywhere: Dornbracht Celebrates Summer Fun With ‘Wendy’

Hit by Wendy’s water cannon; Photo: Instagram user al_zaidy’
What are the two top reasons you should visit Wendy this summer? For the clean air and the cool jets of water, duh. We covered the former extensively a couple weeks back, and now it’s time to turn our sights to the geyser-like blasts, cooling mists, and wading pools that make Wendy so much fun! All these splashy features were made possible by Dornbracht (with Davis & Warshow), who we’ve called the “magicians of all things water” on more than one occasion.

Dornbracht crafts elegant, strikingly stark water fixtures that are the default for any contemporary house. See the indelibly minimalist “Deque” line that makes use of “severe” polished-steel forms which not only dispense, but frame water as it spills forth. There’s also the incredibly meme-able (and borderline NSFW) “Horizontal Shower“, whose cantilevered forms allow the user to recline while showering, as a series of water jets thunder down on them.

At MoMA PS1, Wendy’s water features have quickly proven indispensable, hosing down and cooling off sun-stricken visitors and party goers alike. Children play beside the pools, while adults scramble for a spot in the eye of the pavilions water cannons. Others retreat by the misting walls of water released from under the spiky blue structure.
Sounds refreshing, doesn’t it? Well, escape both office dread and summer sun and head over to 96 Spring Street on Wednesday, August 1 for fun, food, and drinks. Wendy-creators (and Architizer-founders) Matthias Hollwich and Marc Kushner of HWKN will be on hand for the Dornbracht + Davis & Warshow event to talk about what it is that makes the lovable blue skyscrubber so special. They’ll reveal their inspiration and talk in-depth of the many innovations behind the project. So be sure to RSVP (see how below)–we’ll see you there!
