Lev House is a reflection of a detailed work of architectural project in which it was decided to use a sober language through basic geometries that broke the constructive logic of the materials used.

The project is solved in two floors which order the architectural program having as main reference the large garden of the house, obtaining the appropriate orientation in each of the spaces.

The commitment to the use of concrete in ruffles obviously exposes the advantages of this material and results in volumes that defy gravity. The horizontalities manifested in various aspects of the work, since the election in that the centering of the concrete walls, the modulation of the outer timber and wood and iron designed cancelería.

The main structural challenge was flown solve using a clean structure that integrates the architectural design using mixed steel and concrete elements. The house “play” with the idea of using heavier material such as concrete in ruffles, giving an aspect of lightness to a material that is not.

The construction is responding to contemporary language and subtle, eliminating entirely ornamental elements that they don´thave function.

Monument for the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla / TEN Arquitectos

Architects: TEN Arquitectos
Location: Puebla, Mexico
Architect: Enrique Norten
Area: 6,711 sqm
Year: 2011

In Puebla, a city of legends and immense cultural richness, we find a kaleidoscope of buildings, textures and interactions that blend to give us a mosaic of the contemporary culture of the city. Within this framework, to the northeast of the main square is a complex that groups various spaces for culture, education and recreation; this site houses the Monument for the 150th Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla.

Throughout history, monuments have been erected to remind new generations of past events that define current times. Commonly typified as sculptural objects, our proposal seeks to foment the relations between the continuity of public space and maximize the site, through the creation of plural spaces of coexistence, as well as by taking advantage of the views granted by the location.

Formally, the idea of the monument is abstracted to design a space that goes from the open to the enclosed, from the vertical sculpture to the horizontal; stimulating coexistence through the interstices that arise from the premeditated elevation of levels.

On one hand, within these interstices, the program is translated into a gallery of multiple uses that on the top becomes an amphitheater for various types of events. On the other hand, a play area is designed for everyone, from children to the elderly, to have a recreational space with shaded areas and urban furniture. A kiosk and a service area are proposed, where drinks and snacks can be sold.

An artificial resemblance of the original topography, the superposition of the top layer offers visitors a park with undulating movements that generate different environments. The surface is divided into garden areas, wooden deck and sandpits; this division allows for a multiplicity of uses.

Parallel to the project, the densely vegetated context becomes part of the proposal. The trees in the site lean in through perforations that allow them to coexist with the intervention.

As part of the sustainable strategies, three main issues are addressed within the project:

1. Rainwater is collected and stored in tanks for its use throughout the year. This ensures that the need for municipal water is minimized.

2. The drainage system is designed to recycle greywater for its use in toilets and irrigation. A system of filtration and water treatment will provide pure water for human consumption.

Amparo Museum / TEN Arquitectos

Architects: TEN Arquitectos
Location: Puebla, México
Architect In Charge: Enrique Norten
Project Team: Enrique Norten, Salvador Arroyo, Carlos Salas, Alejandro Solis, Marisol Moreno, Daniel Hernández, Omar Barcenas, Luis Farfán, Farid Hernandez
Client: Fundación Amparo
Area: 12,000 sqm
Proyect Year: 2013

Amparo’s Museum building is located within the historical center of the city of Puebla. The museum is composed by various colonial buildings of great historical value and architectonical.

Nowadays, the museum holds a permanent collection of 4,800 prehispanic pieces, some given by the INAH and other from private collections. There is another permanent collection of baroque art and one more of contemporary art including pieces from notable artists such as Javier Marín, Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, Vicente Rojo, Manuel Felguérez and Sebastián.

For the rehabilitation and resize of the building, TEN Arquitectos took in account diverse criteria, such as:

The architectonical modernization of the spaces and of its museographic script: it is planned to use a new design proposal to update the way of exhibiting and walk through the museum’s different collections; by adding a vestibule, we motivate the intercommunication between the collections, but at the same time they can be accessed and enjoyed independently. In the same way, we establish a new way to intercommunicate the museum’s services, so the public and private aspects could be separated and work more efficiently.

Create more temporary exhibition spaces: the museum wants to stay at the forefront in a constant renewal that supports one of the most important objectives of the museum such as social, educational and cultural service. With the addition of these new spaces, the purpose it’s being impelled.

Modernization of electromechanical, structural and media systems: Due to the history of the museum, its age, the different interventions, the constant use, its historical value and the client ́s interest in preserving this legacy, it is important to renew, improve and determinate the current condition of the various MEP systems, and also structural. The architectural proposal includes the opportune maintenance of the entire building.

Benefit the user with the view that exists in the roof of the building, creating spaces like terraces and gardens.

Therefore, visitors will be motivated to know another aspect of the city of Puebla, showing them the magnificent views of the different domes, towers, churches and natural landscape that haven ́t been exploited previously in any other part of the city.

This retreat house in Atlixco is located 30 km from the city of Puebla. Atlixco has an ideal weather for summer vacations and weekends. The user had two main restriction priors the designing of the house. It had to be a one-plant construction and a house that could be used only by two persons or simultaneously by three families of four or five members each.

Jar_-_atlixco_12

The house was then conceived in two sections. The first section recognizes the diagonal street form. In this section are located the parking, main access, kitchen, machine´s room and the two guest´s rooms. The access to the second section is through the breakfast area aside of a triangular patio.

Jar_-_atlixco_6

This patio allows a rotation of the house and creates the second section. The second section contains the public area. This grounds an important value for space and location. Familiar reunions and hosting guests will take place in it. The design of an open area connects visually the space from the triangular patio to the green area. A series of steel beams support 10.5 meters open space in the larger side. The main bedroom is located in the second section with a view to the green area. The bedroom is located in the same line of the kitchen, services and principal access.

Jar_-_atlixco_5

These features can focus the activity of a couple of persons in an area without having to intervene other spaces in the house. It was very important to achieve the most green areas possible in order to promote the familiar gathering using the construction and the function of a family retreat of the house. The building then was concentrated in the front making a façade very private and almost hermetic denying any activity. The other façade has a high percentage of transparency to the green area. Generating side façades effects when creating the ventilation of the internal areas. The residential complex required slabs with a 70% slope. In this case the public area plaque has the greatest slope in the side of the terrace. The guest room’s plaques slope in the wider side up to the main façade. Slabs meet on their lowest points in the triangular patio.

Cholula Student Housing / BNKR Arquitectura

BNKR Arquitectura designed a proposal for a 41 room student housing complex in a residential neighborhood in Cholula for the University of the Americas, which is currently growing and being absorbed into the urban area of Puebla, . The program is characterized as a dense agglomeration of cells with busy common areas that absorb student social life. More images and architects’ description after the break.

San Andrés Cholula is a peaceful, low-density residential zone located beside the traditional heart of San Pedro de Cholula. The University of the Americas, which acts as an urban attractor in Puebla, receives 8000 students yearly who are constantly searching for viable accommodation. Cholula is increasingly seeing developments that cater to this growing student population.

The design is complemented by a series of spaces and programs that assist the primary program. How to insert a dense residential student complex within a traditional suburban neighborhood without adversely affecting the peaceful character of the site? The main issue driving this design was therefore the need for an inward looking building that would not interfere with the local neighborhood yet would allow for a lively social scene at its heart.

The resulting scheme features a central patio surrounded by a linear three-level, four sided ring of housing that opens up onto it. Each housing cell in this ring includes all the amenities necessary for a compact residence: accommodations for sleeping, studying, and a basic kitchen and bathroom. The ground floor includes commercial rentable area, a cafeteria, and a private lounge. From the outside this mass appears closed and private, clad in a single, uninterrupted skin of perforated sleet plate

However, this private block lifts up one of its corners to allow direct access to the patio at ground level. The entire building must be understood as a cloister, with its focus on privacy and interior life, but is also opened up by this gesture, creating a building that is at once closed but welcoming; private but lively.
