Parish Residence of Real / Miguel Carrapa

Architects: Miguel Carrapa
Location: Real, Meã
Project Architect: Miguel Carrapa
Area: 460 sqm
Year: 2011
Photographs: Miguel Carrapa

The project arises from the will of the Church of Real to provide the parish with a parish house that meets the current requirements in terms of program and comfort.

The adaptation of the existing building to the desired program is difficult and confusing, so we opted for a complete demolition and the construction of a new building from scratch. The proposed building is laid out on two floors, ground level and basement, along the dominant axis of the lot.

The basement floor is buried, and we take advantage of the difference between the two platforms to open towards the southwest. The new volume follows the internal organization of the different areas of the house.

To the northeast, next to a car access, there is a covered parking area, a laundry room and a bedroom plus bathroom. To the southwest, the offices and rooms open to a covered balcony overlooking the lower garden.

The kitchen, pantry and cleaning area organize the central volume, which connects the main body with the service and parking. On the other hand, we create a courtyard with the main entrance of the house and a south courtyard with the internal support services.

Below the rooms, in the basement and organized along the hallway, are three bedrooms with bathrooms and three decks. They create a deep facade, allowing for more privacy in the interior space.

Rio de Moinhos Open Air Theatre / ateliermob

Architects: ateliermob
Location: Rio de Moinhos, Abrantes, Portugal
Project Team: Andreia Salavessa and Tiago Mota Saraiva with Vera João, João Torres, Ana Luísa Cunha, Zofia Józefowicz and Sophia Walk (competition: Carolina Condeço, Nuno Ferreira)
Year: 2013
Photographs: Zoraima de Figueiredo

Construction: Construforte – Sociedade de construções e Empreitadas, Lda
Promoter: Câmara Municipal de Abrantes (city council)
Structure: Betar Estudos – José Pedro Venâncio and Maria do Carmo Vieira
Lighting: João Pedro Osório

Following an international competition for the banks of the Tagus River in four counties in central Portugal where ateliermob got the first prize, they were asked to design three projects in the municipality of Abrantes. Located on the right bank of the Tagus River, near the village of Rio de Moinhos, the Cais das Barcas served as a fishing boat dock and transported people and goods between the two banks. Over the years, that space lost its essence, both due to the nearly non-existent maintenance as the constant flooding of the Tagus (the height of the pier is +18.00 m, and the 1979 flood overflowed the river, which rose to 31.00 m).

Following a study of the dynamics of the local population, which can be characterized as having intense activity in recreational and popular associations, and it was understood that an outdoor space that could serve as an informal area for groups and communities and that could withstand submersion for a few days of the year. The new element wipes out the boundary between land and water, projecting itself on the river, and on a flat terrain it erupts in the air as a reference in the landscape.

The project seeks to recreate a place that spring-starts from the renovation of the pier, adding new collective reference meanings and uses. A new space for the local people that acts as a gathering place for the community or as an idyllic meeting place. The entire area around the auditorium, parallel to the existing dock, is redrawn maintaining its natural character, yet providing it with urban furniture – benches and tables for a more effective use by the population. Rio de Moinhos has experienced a difficult relationship with the river, noticeable its urban morphology – from times of flooding to times of drought. Every year, during the rainy season, this structure may become partially submerse.

The proposed structure seeks to reclassify the area, creating a new meeting space for the local community. When no events are taking place, this amphitheater will be ideal to contemplate the river, the landscape and from its highest point, Rio de Moinhos.

Gull / Alfredo Resende Arquitectos

Architects: Alfredo Resende Arquitectos
Location: Porto, Portugal
Design Team: Alfredo Resende, João Resende
Area: 470 sqm
Year: 2013
Photographs: Luis Ferreira Alves

The new and innovative space, gathering three functional  – yet distinctive – complementary areas, is integrated in a recent renovated building. All combined – sushi restaurant, bar and lounge – maintain a singular, orientated philosophy, becoming a reference on space, lightning effects and ambiance.

Attempting to escape the traditional japanese setting, the final piece is an innovative, attractive, confortable and contemporary one.

The heterogeneous entanglement – apparently functionally incompatible – was a major endeavour since the very first day. From the materials chosen up to the connectivity and balance between spaces, all was arranged in a way to make them complimentary and dynamic.

The space includes three floors elevated from the street level. The entrance, made through a staircase, synthesizes all ambiances one can find in each area inside. The staircase symbolizes Gull’s brand, where the access to the lounge, bar and restaurant is made at the end of it.

Cebes School / OVAL

Architects: OVAL
Location: Oporto, Portugal
Architect In Charge: Avelino Oliveira, Gil Brito, Elina Briede, Catarina Ferreira
Construction: Triplano
Year: 2012
Photographs: João Morgado

Proposal:

A group of buildings for the new facilities of the College Cebes (secondary school), which is situated in Foz do Douro, in the municipality of Porto.

Concept:

The project proposes a building that is based on the integration in the surrounding environment characterized by single-family luxury homes, volumes somewhat fragmented, with balconies and rooftops. Thus, in this context, we maintain very distinctive identity on Avenue Marechal Gomes da Costa (the surrounding characterized by this avenue, with an urban character of low density allows easy access to major highways and ensures stability of the building pattern of the area), and created a proposal for a volume that integrates elements of popular architecture and contemporary design with presenting a building with residential architecture characteristics. Therefore, the volume proposed is defined by the rhythms of the architectonic gramar, by the glazed openings and based upon the design of a family house.

Program:

The programmatic development of the school is very simple, extending over three floors. In the basement of the main volume are located: cafeteria, kitchen, staff room, waiting room, facilities for staff and for students and teachers. At level 0 there are: reception, 5 classrooms and toilets. On the 1st floor are: 5 classrooms, specific room and toilet facilities. In basement of the annexes there are: shower facilities and toilets. On the ground floor of annexes there are: area of study / library, EVT and multipurpose room.

AD Classics: Boa Nova Tea House / Alvaro Siza

The Boa Nova Tea House, one of Siza’s earliest commissions, was awarded to him in 1956. His collaborator, Fernando Tavora, had won the competition for the project and passed it onto Alvaro Siza. Its location close to Siza’s home town had its significance, especially due to the architect’s intimate familiarity with the landscape. This is noticed in his incorporation of the rock formation, the ocean, and the greenery within the project, revealing a vivid understanding of the qualities of the local landscape. Alongside the Leça Swimming Pools, this project represents the foundation of Siza’s architecture with a compelling regard for nature.

The small building creates a transition from the city to nature, directing urban dwellers to the rocks and ocean while smoothly settling the architecture in the dominant rock formations. The project is around 300 meters from the main road, and access is through an architectural promenade characterized by platforms and stairs. The promenade creates a playful relationship with the view, hiding the shoreline and horizon at points and revealing them at others. One alternates between the massive rocks of the site and paths of smooth white stone when taking this promenade, always being reminded of nature.

Even the organization of the plan is developed with regard to the site and function. The kitchen and service spaces are partially sunk in the rocks, and the dining room and tea house, joined by an atrium, are oriented toward the view. The dining room opens up to a large outdoor surface, separated from it by a layer of glass that slides into the ground, eliminating the barriers between interior and exterior, with the help of the eaves that extend the ceiling outwards.

The architectural promenade continues from the dining room, so one can directly access the ocean while the small building slowly disappears into the landscape. The tea room benefits from large windows atop a visible concrete base. In this case, the interior space imposes the feeling of sitting between the rocks and observing the view from a distance, creating an almost spiritual experience.

A number of materials are present in the project, from concrete structural elements to wooden furniture and red brick tiles.  Most interior surfaces are covered in wood, the paths covered in light stone, and concrete used for structure, sometimes painted white to contrast with the surrounding.

The Tea House is essentially a conversation between nature and people that strengthens the dialogue through space, experience, and materiality. The project is embraced by the breathtaking setting, never overpowering it while always maintaining a slight contrast. It marks the origin of Siza’s characteristic architecture, the most recent example of which can be seen at the Venice Biennale 2012.

Reconstruction of an house in the very dense urban environment of the fishing area of Caxinas, Vila do Conde.

The very subdivided pre-existing ground floor, gives place to an open social area, defined mostly with plans, some of them curves. Entrance, living-room and kitchen, all connected, almost the same space.

The house is vertically linked by an omnipresent  spiral staircase, that connects the ground floor to an open attic, fun area. In between, the bedrooms floor.   The presence of the white and light, in opposition to the traditional darkness and chaos.

Outside, a plain bright color against the neighboring multi-color ceramic tiles. In the ground floor, a thermowood coating, in different directions camouflaging a garage door.

Private House in Viseu / Bau.Uau Arquitectura

Architects: Bau.Uau Arquitectura
Location: Viseu, Portugal
Architect In Charge: Cristina Emília Silva, Alberto Montoya
Contractor: Imprilar Lda.
Area: 220 sqm
Year: 2011
Photographs: Ivo Tavares Studio

We looked to this renewal as a project of a new home. The conditions are similar: the limits of the intervention are defined by the exterior walls and by the sloping planes of the roof, the accesses are defined by the two existing stairways, the solar orientations are brought to the interior by the existing openings of the windows.

The solar exposition was determinant in the distribution of the program (as it uses to be in our projects of new buildings): the localization of the living room was solved on the end of the volume, getting advantage of the existing windows in the three walls, one turned to east, two in the biggest wall turned to south and another turned to west, and also appropriating all the height towards the intersection of the inclined plans of the ceiling crossed by wooden supporting beams. The maximum height of the volume is announced on the top of the main stairway, where the tiles dematerialize in order to give light from the zenith to the entrance and to the access of the attic. In the attic there’s a bedroom and a bathroom for guests, a polyvalent room and a balcony over the living room, touching the wooden beams.

In the lower level a curved volume organizes around itself all the compartments, dividing the more private circulations from the most public ones of the house: the living room where it offers a bookshelf, the bedrooms turned to east, the kitchen to west, and it creates a leftover space to be used without script or as a dinning room when contaminated by the kitchen which is contiguous. This round volume hosts in its interior the bathroom. Its exterior is lined by wooden battens painted on one side with the noble functions of induction and reflection of the movement that creates and a constant reference for who lives in this house.
