This house is placed in the last third of a sloping site which it is accessed from below. This position determinates the construction so that the access path doesn’t interrupt the view of the near context of the house.

The whole program is developed in a unique level, with the exception of a bedroom, a bathroom and a guests living room that takes advantage of the acclivity of the site and appears below the main volume of the house.

Proposed spaces are organized in terms of the panoramic view that shapes a slender horizontal body that is oriented towards the south-west. To control the effects of this orientation it is projected a 2 meter wing that emphasizes the horizontal condition of the house on the ground.

View and orientation has an influence on the design of the roofing. The continuous slab is folded longitudinally in order to give shape to two parallel skylights that run along the whole length of the house.

El Pangue House stands on a steep slop site facing the ocean view. The house is developed towards a central vertical circulation, connecting the 4 levels and 3 terraces in which the house is organized, in order to get as much of the view of the pacific ocean as possible, taking advantage of the high offered by the natural slop of the site.

Each level organizes a different part of the program; the access goes through the lower level were you find parking zone, storage and an open shower. The next level up meets the public zones of the house such as kitchen, play room, dining room and living room. The third level features berdrooms and family room and the fourth the main bedroom.

The constructive system is generated upon sustaining concrete walls that terraces the site in three levels. The fourth level was designed in lightweight structure with wood siding. The living room level appears as a great terrace surrounded by planters which replaces the railings.

The house is located in a privileged area of ground in terms of views, orientation, etc.. so the shape of the house adapts to the existing, respecting the existence of a large rock cliff and a number of native trees. Both the shape of the house as its program does not serve the purpose of intervening the natural landscape. that is why the house is composed of two volumes connected by a bridge way around the rock and adapt to the position of the trees.

© Marcos Mendizabal

The language of the house responds to the use of typical materials of the south of Chile (shingles, wood) with its own language by treating the wood with carbonileo outward, giving the color black, and a natural interior. Moreover, it is used a more contemporary language with the concrete to create a high noble plane on which is mounted much of the program. The result is a mix between a typical southern barn and a contemporary house, taking care of the integration of interior and exterior, in which, like a tree house, the house takes a privileged position facing the landscape.

La Dehesa House / elton+léniz arquitectos asociados

Architects: elton+léniz arquitectos asociados
Location: Lo Barnechea, Santiago, Chile
Architects: Mirene Elton, Mauricio Léniz
Project Year: 2011
Project Area: 570 sqm
Photographs: Natalia Vial

At the site, in a private community in La Dehesa, is possible to appreciate a mountain landscape and an environment with plenty native vegetation. The site dimensions are slack for the program needs and rooms for a house of 500m2. Allocation decisions set the house on two stories and in a constant recognition of the width and depth of field of the site.

© Natalia Vial

The ground floor determines the program in transversal stripes of use, where the first includes bedrooms, living rooms and study rooms of children, and the second, common use areas, dining room and main living room. This sequence gets articulated by a main circulation axis that distributes circulations from the access to common areas and as projection to the bottom of the site.

© Natalia Vial

Based on structural criteria and expression, the first level is constructed in concrete and the second in light metal structure. This allows recognizing two typologies within the house: A horizontal base where concrete, stone and wood volumes predominates .

© Natalia Vial

The composition, materiality and organization of the sequences that build public and private are the strategy of this work.
