Well Defined Modern Personality: House in South-Western Australia

design House in SWA Well Defined Modern Personality: House in South Western Australia

The idea that generated the design of this House in South-Western Australia was to achieve a reflection of the surrounding landscapes through materials and living spaces evoking openness: “the project displays the paired ideas of meandering and built formality, reflecting the relationship between the natural contours of bushland (emblematic of the site’s iconic Margaret River view, with its rolling river headland) and the crisp horizontal nature of the ocean beyond”, explained the creative team at Tierra Design.

Functionally separated in two building wings by a central courtyard, the residence provides the opportunity of two families living together. White canopies shelter the volumes, adding an interesting effect to the overall exterior design composition: “The rooves are transformed from a gesture at entry to expansive planes, echoing the breadth of landscape beyond. The ceilings become a floating island contrasting with the olive backdrop of bush”. Timber screens and stone walls further contribute to the project’s well defined modern personality.

A Sense of Volume And Love For Wood: Modern House in Portland

House in Portland A Sense of Volume And Love For Wood: Modern House in Portland

Wood is one of the fine materials that never go out of trend. It’s an inspiration for all architecture enthusiasts out there because it’s both modern and classy. It’s like the little black dress from a woman’s wardrobe. It’s bold and influential and it establishes a connection between man and the environment. It is warm and familiar and most of the times, this is a really important issue, especially when it comes to choosing the perfect décor for your home, the place where you intend to spend some time for a while. We’ve spotted this interesting house on Plastolux and we felt like sharing it with you too. Now, when it comes to Portland, there’s an interesting phenomenon going on: there’s always something new (and modern) in the way.

Courtyard2 A Sense of Volume And Love For Wood: Modern House in Portland

The interior of this particular house is bright and it opens up to the courtyard, boasting a sense of volume and space. The wood excess creates a cozy ambience, something to remind us of the comfortable and inviting mountain chalets, only less crowded. Breezy and elegant, the place is perfect for someone that loves freedom and The facade, the interior staircase, the ceiling, even the shower – all these have a common element: wood.

Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, Australia

Taringa House Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, Australia

Recently renewed by Loucas Zahos Architects, the Taringa House, located in a tranquil suburb of Brisbane, Australia boasts a wonderful interior characterised by transparence and brightness. Originally, Taringa House functioned as a worker’s cottage. After the “intervention”, only a few of the original elements were kept. One of the elements was the street façade (the client’s wish was to keep it “untainted” and let it follow the neighbourhood’s traditional design line).

This “old vs new” division generated a clear contrast between the building’s forms. “The ‘old’ cottage functions as an entrance from street level, also accommodating a guest bedroom, bathroom and overflow living space. The ‘new’ addition is the core of everyday living in the house. It contains the kitchen, main living area, dining and bedrooms.”

The living room opens up to the terrace and the courtyard. What’s really interesting is that all the glass work  makes a Jacaranda tree (one of the old elements kept “alive”) visible from almost any room. The family lives in the new structure while the old part has been transformed into a guesthouse. Taringa House Panels Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaMetallic Panels Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaCourtyard4 Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaView Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaTerrace View Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaKitchen4 Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaOpen Space Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaReading Area Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaBathroom8 Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaPlan2 Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaDetails Plan Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaPlan Sketch Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, AustraliaSketch Plan Old vs New: The Spectacular House Guarded by a Jacaranda Tree in Brisbane, Australia

Visually Challenging No Matter What The Standpoint: ITA House, Mexico

architecture House ITA Visually Challenging No Matter What The Standpoint: ITA House, Mexico
Taller5 Arquitectos completed the design and development for ITA House, a modern residential project located in La Piedad, Michoacan, Mexico. Visually challenging no matter what the standpoint, the project was imagined as a junction of volumes, closed on one side and “unlocked” on the other. Centered around a modernly-landscaped garden, the residence provides a large degree of openness from every room.

design House ITA Visually Challenging No Matter What The Standpoint: ITA House, Mexico

A special design element stands out: “From the point of access to the house, we see a great character linker element: a lattice steel designed based on a line that evokes endless branches naturally suspended. Raised on this concrete and steel lobby, is the main volume of red marble coated creating the perfect contrast between warm and cold formula repeated in the rest of the finishes chosen.” The interior design is minimalist, with wood and glass playing a major role in the composition.

Playful And Quirky Details Influencing Lighting: Casa Natalia by Agraz Arquitectos

Lovely House in Mexico Playful And Quirky Details Influencing Lighting: Casa Natalia by Agraz Arquitectos

“Play with the light” – this could be a wonderful slogan for Casa Natalia, the residential project developed by Agraz Arquitectos in Guadalajara, Mexico.  Imagine how the world of design would look like if each house had a slogan, in the first place. By exploring (just) a little bit the field of branding, we see how slogans (and mottos) can influence our decision when it comes to purchasing products based on the level of respect and attraction towards the brand. Now, applying the same principle, could a house with a slogan influence our thinking and convince us that a certain house is worth buying? We don’t know yet about this, but what we know for certain is that the way you present a house, can.

Casa Natalia Playful And Quirky Details Influencing Lighting: Casa Natalia by Agraz Arquitectos

Casa Natalia is charming and warm. It allows the light to sneak inside in a very playful way thanks to the panels installed on the windows. The horizontal cut outs create an interesting atmosphere, especially during the evenings, when the moon scatters its shy rays. The house spreads on three levels. “The vertical circulations that join all stories are contained in this added limb and where coated, in and outside, by metal and wood shutters designed by the artist Adrian Guerrero. These control light and privacy and allow a poetic dialogue between glass and steel.” Modern, elegant and airy, Casa Natalia is a welcoming family house that boasts quirky details, in order to create the perfect living space.

Relaxed Country Lifestyle Delivered Modernly: Pearl Valley 276

architecture SAOTA Pearl Valley 1024x682 Relaxed Country Lifestyle Delivered Modernly: Pearl Valley 276

A young family re-locating to the Western Cape was looking to change from city living to a more relaxed country lifestyle in which to bring up their young family and settled for the exclusive Pearl Valley Golf Estate, 30 minutes away from the Mother City of Cape Town, South Africa. The owners approached ANTONI ASSOCIATES to create an interior that was modern but with an emphasis on ‘barefoot luxury’ and the use of natural materials. The design approach by Mark Rielly and Jon Case was to focus on the use of natural organic materials such as timber and stone. Timber flooring was used throughout, which contrasts with the raw off-shutter concrete ceilings, warm stone and marble cladding.

The owners of this home love to entertain and wanted the house to reflect their lifestyle. The informal family spaces include an open plan kitchen, informal dining and open bar, all linked to the entertainment lounge. A feature marble clad two-sided fireplace divides and screens off the family lounge from the spa room. These areas of the house flow out onto the outdoor entertainment deck with a sunken outdoor boma (a typical South African outdoor enclosure). Here timber seating is casually arranged around an open fire.

The furniture is modern and complementary to the experience of the home. The clients’ love for color has been introduced with injections of bold prints and vibrant fabrics. Bespoke furniture from OKHA Interiors is featured throughout. A combination of bold and discreet lighting was used to create a “wow” factor and the layering of lighting set various moods. Subtle lighting has been incorporated in all recesses and feature bulkheads to give a warm glow to peripheral edges. Concealed lighting has also been used to highlight and accentuate the organic natural finishes.[Information provided via e-mail by SAOTA; Photographs: Adam Letch]
